Learning Plan

5 Year Learning Plan

My Professional Learning Plan is one that I am constantly trying to perfect. I have grown and learned a lot about the learning design industry simply by taking these courses. However, I am hungry for more. I plan to align and familiarize myself with organizations such as the Instructional Designers Association and try to attend conferences regarding instructional design. I will keep in touch with my advisors and leaders in this department as well as my professors. I have done most of my research in the area of general instructional design for higher education and K-12. I have, gained an interest in corporate instructional design (for example, designing in-services and short training modules for employees. I believe that this could open freelance opportunities as well as specific skills and growth. I have taken a liking to the instructionaldesign.org website that has an anthology of peer-reviewed journals on learning design. They have journals such as the American Journal of Distance Education, the Innovate Journal of Online Education, the Journal of Applied Instructional Design and many more. Through these I have learned about the differences in designing for education vs corporate, how to shift the focus of a course and even how to adapt to the growing technological needs of a growing institution.

The three groups (among many) that I would be interested in joining are the UMGC Alumni Association, the Instructional Designers Association, and InsructionalDesign.org. The Alumni association I feel, will provide me with the most specific resources to find jobs in my field as well as provide advisement and counseling. As a new learning designer entering the workforce, I feel as though that is needed. The other two organizations in my opinion provide the most up to date and reliable information on the industry.

My first future goal is to secure a job as a learning designer. I have already gained a temporary position in the field and I hope that it opens the door to other permanent roles!  I am applying with the note that I am a graduate student that has almost finished my program. I have also been reading out to student/ career services for help with my resume. My second future goal is to choose my PhD Program. I have begun looking at schools and I think I have it figured out! This is exciting! Hoping to get my PhD in Education! My third future goal is to start my own organization that provides STEM Programming to underfunded schools! I am not sure what steps I need to take to make that dream a reality, so I hope to reach out to my network!
